About Qatar

Doha is the heart of Qatar with the majority of the population living in the city. Like many cities in the region, the skyline is continuously changing. The scenery of the area is beautiful. If you enjoy water activities then your spare time can be fully occupied whether this be fishing, water-skiing; paragliding; and other activities. The quality of life is relaxed and carefree. There is a strong emphasis on sporting activities. The State has strong oil and gas reserves.

Population

As with most of the Gulf regions the population is increasing all the time. Currently it is estimated Doha has an estimated population of 400,000.

Language

Arabic is the native language, however almost everyone speaks English to some extent.

Currency and Banking

The monetary unit is the Qatari Ryal QAR. Paper currency comes in 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500. There are a number of national and international banks represented with ready ATM access available throughout the city.

Climate

Having a moderate desert climate you will experience hot summers and mild winters. Winter nights can be cool but temperatures rarely drop below 7 degrees. Temperatures in the summer can reach 40 degrees.

Culture

As an Arabic, Islamic area, religious customs and norms dominate the culture. However the city enjoys a relatively relaxed and idyllic lifestyle with a strong emphasis on sport. It has become increasingly popular as a result of some high profile international sporting events that include tennis and motor car racing. Alcohol is prohibited except in some of the international hotels. Again it is necessary to be culturally aware but you would be welcomed as the city is seen as friendly and inviting.
