Primary health care in New Zealand is a user pays system which is partially funded by the New Zealand Government. This means that you would expect to pay for your Family Practitioner visit, as well as a small proportion of the prescription fee.
Secondary and Tertiary level care is fully funded for New Zealand residents, citizens from countries with a reciprocal health agreement (such as Australia, the UK and Canada), or people on a work permit of 2 years or greater. Many people take up the option of private health insurance to avoid potentially long waiting times in the Public system.
