Australians in general love technology and as such access to the internet is usually readily available throughout all metropolitan and regional areas. Access in more remote locations can be either non-existant or expensive.
Broadband internet (ADSL and Cable) is available in most areas, with some more remote areas still reliant on dia- up access. Many cities and towns have internet cafes, where you can access the internet and web based email accounts easily and cheaply.
For more permanent access, Australia has quite a number of suppliers that are more than eager to sign you up. The plans offered vary in cost depending on the length of contract you are willing to sign up for.
Australian providers that you might like to try are Bigpond (Telstra - Australia's largest telecommunications provider), Optusnet, and Ozemail, although there are many others.
